About Reading

When your child is reading, use the 3Ps -
Pause, Prompt, Praise

Pause if the child is unsure, wait a moment.  Let your child look at the pictures and words to work out the meaning.

Give a prompt or clue that encourages your child to look closer and have a go.  Ask a question such as what word might make sense?

Praise all efforts.  If the child is still unsure, tell them the word so they don’t lose the meaning of the story.

Questioning Techniques

Ask questions that require the answer to include a range of language.  Use the 5WsWho, what, where, when, why and ask them about their feelings.  The idea is to have a discussion with your child about the story, not just look for the correct answers.

For example:

There are 3 kinds of questions and it is important to ask all three kinds about texts.  This way you are checking for understanding with simple questions and also allowing the child to think more deeply about the story and make connections with the world around them and their personal feelings.

Literal Questions:  The answer is in the story.  Eg – Who sat on Baby Bear’s chair?

Inferential Questions: The child must search for clues in the story and think about the answer.  Eg – Why was Papa Bear mad?

Evaluative:  The answer won’t be told in the story.  The child must find the answer in their head.  Eg – How would you feel if someone slept in your bed?
